Belt and Road Art Talent Training Program 2024

Admission Brochure

The Silk Road, historically renowned as the most famous route linking the East and the West, represents a vibrant cultural corridor that brings together different civilizations. The past glory of the Silk Road serves as an essential foundation for a confluence of diverse cultures to meet and grow together in the new era. To foster cultural exchanges with countries along this route, Shanghai Conservatory of Music (SHCM) and Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), under the auspices of the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, will jointly organize the 2024 Belt and Road Art Talent Training Program, aiming to enhance talent training and promote education towards a promising future.

I. Theme

The Belt and Road Art Talent Training Program has successfully completed five sessions since its initiation in 2018. This year, the program will focus on traditional Chinese music and theatre, providing international participants with various activities to enhance their understanding and interest in Chinese art and culture from multiple perspectives. Meanwhile, it also aims to encourage cultural exchange between international participants and Chinese students, allowing them to showcase their rich and colorful music culture. Through such exchanges, we can better understand and appreciate different cultures, embracing cultural diversity in an open manner and striving towards a more connected and harmonious world.

Both organizers have identified a specific focus for their activities. The SHCM will present activities that highlight representative traditional music instruments of China and other countries along the Silk Road, while the STA will offer an immersion into traditional theatrical aesthetics to explore the connection between the heritage of Chinese theatres and the arts of other Silk Road countries.

II. Program Duration: June 5 – 28, 2024

III. Activities

The program will include a) special lecture series and workshops by prestigious professors and experts focusing on the performing techniques and creative ideas of traditional Chinese music, as well as Chinese theatrical art; b) roundtable discussions and seminars where participants can exchange ideas and share what they’ve learned during the program; and c) field trips to major cultural venues such as Shangyin Opera House and He Luting Concert Hall, as well as suburban areas of Shanghai, for participants to experience local cultural life.

IV. Enrollment Quota

The Belt and Road Art Talent Training Program 2024 is open to international students and scholars aged between 16 and 40. Participants must be non-Chinese citizens residing outside China.

The Program will enroll 18 qualified applicants on a full scholarship that covers application, tuition, accommodation, activities, and comprehensive insurance fees.
